Nepal Investigative Multimedia Journalism Network (NIMJN)’s Founder Rajneesh Bhandari has won the Themis Award 2022 in the Speak-up category.
Themis announced today that NIMJN’s Founder and CEO Rajneesh Bhandari was awarded the Themis Speak Up Award 2022 for his role in a variety of key investigations that exposed corruption in Nepal and for training a new generation of investigative journalists.
“Rajneesh Bhandari has not only done a huge amount of work to expose corruption himself through meticulous investigative journalism, sometimes putting himself at risk in the process, but he also trains others and inspires a network of investigative journalists to follow in his footsteps. This is why I have chosen Rajneesh as the winner of the Themis 2022 Speak Up Award,” said Nick Dale, a judge for the Speak-up award category and Superintendent at West Midlands Police.
Rajneesh Bhandari’s work has been published in several outlets including BBC, The Guardian, The New York Times, DW, Aljazeera, Kantipur Television, and others. His investigative stories exposing diplomatic passport scams, corruption in food distribution in remote districts, human trafficking, and stories on Nepal earthquake rehabilitation are well-read.
In 2020, he founded NIMJN which is a Nepal-based non-profit media organization that produces investigative multimedia stories related to social justice and accountability issues, using the latest tools and techniques. It also provides advanced investigative multimedia reporting training and mentorship to journalists.
NIMJN is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network(GIJN) and a collaborative partner organization of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).
“It’s an honor for NIMJN and me,” Bhandari said, “I dedicate this award to those who believe in the free press and independent journalism.”
The awarding organization, Themis, seeks to lower the impact of financial crime in the world and recognize and award the people and organizations involved in this fight against financial crime. Their Speak Up Award helps to recognize the courage and bravery of an individual raising awareness of a financial crime event.
“Through these awards, we want to highlight fantastic work, best practices, achievements, and determination of individuals, organizations, and companies in their contribution to the fight against financial crime,” said Dickon Johnstone, CEO at Themis.

थेमिसले आफ्नाे वेभसाट मार्फत आज घोषणा गर्दै नेपाल इन्भेस्टिगेटिभ मल्टिमिडिया जर्नलिज्म नेटवर्क (निमजिन) का संस्थापक भण्डारीलाई नेपालमा भ्रष्टाचार उजागर गर्ने विभिन्न खाेजमुलक समाचार गरेकाे तथा नयाँ पुस्ताका खोज पत्रकारहरूलाई प्रशिक्षण दिएकोमा ‘स्पिक अप अवार्ड २०२२’ प्रदान गरिएको जनाएकाे छ ।
थेमिस वित्तीय अपराधको विश्वव्यापी प्रभावलाई कम गर्न बेलायतमा स्थापित संस्था हो। थेमिसले विश्वमा वित्तीय अपराधको प्रभावलाई न्युन गर्न र वित्तीय अपराध विरुद्धको लडाइँमा संलग्न व्यक्ति र संस्थाहरूकाे याेगदानकाे कदर गर्दै विभिन्न क्याटेगाेरीका पुरस्कार प्रदान गर्छ ।

रजनीश भण्डारीका खाेजमुलक समाचारहरू बीबीसी, द गार्डियन, द न्युयोर्क टाइम्स, ड्यूचे वेले, अल्जजीरा, कान्तिपुर टेलिभिजन लगायतका विभिन्न आउटलेटहरूमा प्रकाशित तथा प्रसारित छन्। उहाँले कूटनीतिक राहदानीकाे घोटाला, दुर्गम जिल्लामा खाद्यान्न वितरणमा भएको भ्रष्टाचार, मानव बेचबिखन, भूकम्पपछिको पुनःस्थापना लगायतका समाचारहरू बाहिर ल्याउनुभएकाे छ ।
सन् २०२० मा उहाँले निमजिनको स्थापना गर्नुभयाे, जुन एक गैर-नाफामुलक मिडिया संस्था हो । यसले सामाजिक न्याय र जवाफदेहिता सम्बन्धि खोजमूलक मल्टिमिडिया समाचारहरू उत्पादन गर्छ। निमजिनले पत्रकारहरूलाई खोजमूलक रिपोर्टिङ तालिम र मेन्टरसिप पनि प्रदान गर्छ। निमजिन ग्लोबल इन्भेस्टिगेटिभ जर्नलिज्म नेटवर्क (जीआईजेएन)काे सदस्य र अर्गनाइज्ड क्राइम एण्ड रिपोर्टिङ्ग प्रोजेक्ट (ओसीसीआरपी) काे साझेदार संस्था हाे ।
‘यो अवार्ड निमजिन र मेराेलागि गाैरवकाे विषय हो,’ भण्डारीले अवार्ड पाइसकेपछि भन्नुभयाे, ‘म यो अवार्ड स्वतन्त्र प्रेस र स्वतन्त्र पत्रकारितामा विश्वास गर्नेहरुलाई समर्पित गर्दछु ।’
